Although the details aren't certain, sometime after First Contact with the Alliance a great discovery was made...

Buried deep below the Great American Desert something was found that defied explanation. Even the technological wonders of the Alliance couldn't describe it properly. Within a huge spherical room something that could not be determined as organic or inorganic was found. It was named the The Center Space (a portal to another universe) by the scientists who found it. The Temple of Xemina named it Masau'u (the Fourth World), the source of Darkness.

In a sense Xenists were right. In the beginning, Earth prospered as the galaxy's center of trade and science, gaining the attention of all the galaxy's sentient races. However, it also gained attention of a race known as the Thahazi. Although the exact nature of the relationship between the Masau'u and the Thahazi are unknown, it is clear the Thahazi understood what the Masau'u was, an energy source of unbelievable power.

The Thahazi eventualy invaded. And when they invaded they showed no mercy. With the power unleashed by the Masau'u they controlled virtually all life in Galaxy, mutating that life to suit their needs. Even the combined might of the Alliance and the Vharata Empire was no match, whole worlds were destroyed...

The Occupation is now over, and life on Earth, as well as other worlds, as we know it has changed. All now fight to rebuild what was lost... This is the universe of the Center Space, a galaxy torn by a 300 year alien Occupation. Earth is still the center of the galaxy, as all worlds have become dependant on the Masau'u for energy. The Masau'u is the life blood of the galaxy, giving power to the grand cities and starships of Earth, the Alliance, and even the Vharata Empire.

Before the humans of Earth were even capable of space travel, a race known as the Siduri had already created a grand Alliance of planets. At its height the Alliance spanned hundreds of light-years and included over one hundred sentient races. Although the Alliance today is nowhere near the splendor it once was, it's influence can still be seen all across the galaxy. The Alliance, believed to be mental and socially enlightened by the rest of galaxy, has taken the role of galactic police and banker since the Final War and the end of the Occupation.

Once Arch enemies of the Alliance, the Vharata Empire vowed to conquer the Siduri and their Alliance. Unlike the Alliance, who stove for a galaxy in which all sentient races can live in peace and equality, the Vharata Empire believe that the universe blesses the strong. The physically superior Vharata spread across the galaxy, conquering every world in its path, including the Andavi and the Dijat. If it wasn't for the Invading Thahazi, the Vharata may have been able to overtake the Alliance. After the Occupation, the once mighty Empire was reduced to dozens of warring clans, each ruling over their own fief, the Emperor little more than a figurehead.

The Ka'Ubla, began as a revolutionary religion on Earth during the Corporate Wars. The Ka'Ubla believed that the violent overthrow of the Corporations was sanctioned by God. After the Occupation, and thousands of Dijat refuges settled on Earth, the religions of the Dijat and human Ka'Ubla blended together. The Ka'Ubla's beliefs have changed little since its founding. They belief that they were chosen by God to fight for the oppressed, until all sentient beings live as one. Representatives of all races can be found in the Ka'Ubla. They currently openly advocate the overthrow of both the Alliance and M.D.C.

The M.D.C., or Masau'u Distribution Corporation, is arguable the most powerful organization in the galaxy. The M.D.C is a human corporation based on Earth that distributes the much need Masau'u energy to a fuel starved post-Invasion galaxy. When the antimatter factories of the Alliance and Empire were destroyed by the Thahazi, the galaxy was desperately in need of an alternative fuel source. The humans, who learned to adapt the energy of the Center Space realized it could be sold the rest of the galaxy. And under the guidance of the Alliance the M.D.C. was formed. Most human cities today, although technically part of the Alliance, are actually controlled by the M.D.C.

The Dread Thahazi. The Thahazi are the most hated and feared race in the galaxy. They were responsible for the 300 year enslavement of hundreds if not thousands of worlds, known today as the Occupation. Even before the Occupation, the Thahazi had a vast Collective on the outer rim of the Alliance. Using advanced genetic engineering, the parasitic Thahazi mutated whole ecosystems to suit their purpose. All Thahazi technology is organic and with every world conquered they increased their genetic knowledge, and therefore their technology. Only the Pank revere the Thahazi, who see them as their creators. Thahazi creatures still haunt space and the worlds which the Thahazi once enslaved.

The Church of Science, is an Earth based religion. It was founded sometime in the 22nd century, in response to the increasing concern of unethical scientific conduct and the appearance of a new human species: homo psionics; humans with true, scientifically provable psychic abilities. Led by the prophet M'batian, homo psionics psychics and normal homo sapiens scientists formed a new religion based on logic, reason, and the idea that human consciousness held infinite power. This elevating Science to Godlike status. Today the Church of Science is the official state religion of the MDC. Scientists are ordained like priests, and researchers live monastic lives. Most humans, i.e. homo psionics, today are believers. The Church controls all scientific research on Earth and any outside research is considered blasphemy .

Another Earth based religion which has began to gain influence among many non-human races. The full name of the religion is the Temple of Ximena, named after the last prophet of Earth, who was sent by the Annunaki to unite the Old Religions. Sometimes called the Universal Church, the Xenists believe that all religions are one, and the gods and angles of old are actually an advanced race known as the Annunaki who are messengers of a truly godlike race known as the Elohim. The Xenists are organized into sects, each sect representing one of the Old Religions. Xenism tends to be more popular among homo sapiens minority on Earth and off-world where the MDC and Church have little influence. Some Xenist priests are said to have mystical powers, gifts from the Annunaki.
